Lines, layovers, delays and checkpoints make airports stressful places. And Baltimore Washington International (BWI), with more than 57,000 passengers a day, drains even the most laid-back vacationer.

Yet between concourses B and C is a spacious lounge, peaceful and somewhat underused, because it’s outside the security areas.

BWI’s Observation Gallery, with rocking chairs and cushy seating, beckons weary travelers to relax and watch a never-ending show. A window wall separates the upper-level deck from the hectic business of takeoffs, landings and baggage handling below.

If watching other people at work isn’t restful, an aviation exhibit provides diversion. A huge aircraft turbine stars here, but interactive displays along the wall cover everything from traffic control to aerodynamics. Other assets: free wireless connection and an aviation-themed play area for young travelers.
